CARSON -- Freshman
Eric Watson led four Cal State Dominguez Hills players in double-figure scoring while
Andre Ball (pictured) was one of two Toros to post a double-double, but visiting San Francisco State finished strong in overtime to take a thrilling 78-75 decision over the hosts on a wet afternoon in Carson.
CSUDH falls to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in the CCAAÂ while SFSU improves to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in league action.
The Toros got off to a hot start to open the game, taking a 14-8 lead after a
Damien Miller fastbreak bucket at the 13:40 mark, with
DJ Guest again putting the hosts up by six two minutes later at 19-13. Â
After SFSU scored the next six points to catch the Toros, the teams tied four more times down the stretch before a triple by Gator CJ Belamy gave the visitors a slim lead entering intermission.
The Gators stretched their lead to 40-33 to start the second half until CSUDHÂ used a 16-10 run to climb to within 50-49 on an
Andre Ball bucket, taking the lead at 51-50 after a missed SFSU attempt and defensive board led to a Guest layup.
San Francisco State regrouped to to take a nine point lead at 62-53 with just under six minutes left in regulation, only to have a Ball triple,
DeMorian Lowe layup and high-arching 3-pointer by
Isaiah Morris bring the Toros to within 64-61.
After another one-and-out by the Gators,
Jeremy Dent-Smith added two made foul shots to further shrink CSUDH's deficit, with a Lowe layup after another SFSU miss starting the scoring sequence.
With the game tied at 69-all and 11 ticks left, Lowe grabbed an offensive board under the basket, but his putback attempt with a second left went awry and another offensive board and successful putback came after the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.
It was all SFSU in the extra period as the Gators took a 78-71 lead with 2:06 left in the extra session. Ball, however, sunk four-consecutive free throws to give the Toros hope with a missed Gator attempt and Toro rebound with 12 seconds left giving CSUDH an opportunity to tie the game.
The Gators' Jonah Roth, however, intercepted a Toro pass in the paint and dribbled out the clock, allowing SFSU to escape with the win.
Guest added 13 and
Jordan Hilstock 12 in the loss, with both Ball and Guest tying for game-high honors with 10 boards each.
The Toros will travel 18 miles on Thursday to take on Cal State LA in a crosstown rivalry matchup, scheduled for a 7:30 pm tip.
