Cassie Taylor tied for match-high honors with 16 kills, but visiting Stan State came away with a 3-1 win this afternoon to spoil head coach Jen Adeva's birthday.
The Toros fall to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, while the Warriors improve to 8-2 overall, and 1-1 in the CCAA.
The visitors scored the first six points to open the match before taking a 17-5 edge en route to an easy first-set win.
The Toros regained ther competitive spirit in the second set, taking an early 4-3 lead. The Warriors, however, who took a five-set win over CSUDH in last weekend's Toro Volleyball Classic tournament, flexed their collective muscles to score the next five points and running their lead to 18-11. CSUDH would get no closer than six points the rest of the set before going down two sets to none.
After intermission, the Warriors looked to close the hosts out as they took a 9-6 lead. Behind
Angelina Cabal's serve, however, CSUDH knotted the frame at 9-9 before scoring five-straight points to take control of the set at 14-10. After Stan State crept to within 15-14, the Toros reeled off six-straight behind
Mya Tillman's serve and a pair of Taylor hammers to take a 21-14 lead, eventually taking the set on a Stan State attack error.
The fourth set saw the teams split the first 16 points, before kills by
Shelby Saporetti and Jenna Ssandall inching the Toros in front. The Warriors, however, regrouped to take a 17-15 lead before extending it to 21-16, taking control of the set.
Kills by
Jesi Diekmann and Sandall brought the Toros to within 22-19, only to have the Warriors score three of the next four points to take the win.
The Toros hit just .134 for the match while committing six more attack errors and putting away 19 less balls.
CSUDH takes to the road next week, beginning with a match at Cal State East Bay on Thursday.
