Box Score 2 CARSON -- One day after scoring 10 runs to open this weekend's series against Sonoma State, the Cal State Domiguez Hills offense duplicated its effort en route to a 10-7 win over the Seawolves to open today's twinbill on a sunny day at Toro Field. But Sonoma countered with a 7-run inning to take a 7-3 game-two win to split the doubleheader.
In addition to Cal State East Bay's split at Cal State San Bernardino, the Toros (24-21, 19-16 CCAA) still hold onto fifth place in the CCAA standings. They still trail the Yotes by one for fourth and lead both the Pioneers and Seawolves (20-24, 17-18 CCAA) by two with five to play.
Leadoff hitter
Eric Smelko enjoyed a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI to wreck the Seawolves' game plan, inspired by Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" as his walk-up song.
The Toros knocked 11 hits against the Seawolves, and benefited from three errors by the visitors, one of which helped lead to two of three runs in the 1st inning for a quick 3-0 lead.
After SSU answered with four runs in the 2nd, the Toros regained the lead in their 2nd-inning at-bat, courtesy of an
Alberto Luevano RBI double and another Seawolf miscue.
Smelko added an RBI single one inning later, before SSU was able to knot the game at 7-7 with a single run in the 4th and two in the 6th.
That's when
Kevin Moscoso belted an opposite field home run with Luevano on base in the 6th inning to give the Toros the lead for good, and a
Caleb Ellis RBI single brought home
Matt Mecate with the game's final run.
Carlos Bracamontes earned with win with 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings of work, while
Matt Garcia picked up his first save by earning the final two outs.
Luevano and Moscoso each knocked two hits in the win.
Game two started off promising for Dominguez Hills. In the second inning, Accordino and PIerson Loska, who made his catching debut, got on singles to setup runners at the corners. Mecate brought home Accordino on a groundout and then Loska scored on
Caleb Ellis' single to center. One inning later,
Scott Ogrin led off with a home run for his 18th of the season, moving him two shots closer to tying the program record set by Jon Alia in 2009. The home run gave the Toros a 3-0 lead.
The Seawolves answered back in the fourth inning by plating all seven of their runs off of
Nate Ortiz. Ortiz would strikeout four batters but allowed seven hits and a walk in his outing. Abraham Carillo took over in the fifth and pitched a shutout the rest of the way.
The two sides will wrap up Dominguez Hills' 2022 home schedule Sunday at 11 a.m. Prior to first pitch at appoximately 10:35 a.m., the Toros will honor their senior class.
