INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite being on a scheduled and well-deserved bye weekend with one series left in the regular-season, the NCAA Softball Championships committee kept Cal State Dominguez Hills at No. 4 in the second of three regional rankings Wednesday.
The NCAA regional rankings is perhaps the most important poll in Division II, for it serves as the official projection for the eight-team NCAA Regionals in three weeks determined by the committee. The West Region consists of teams from the CCAA, PacWest and Great Northwest Athletic conferences.
The top six in the latest edition of the poll remains the same, which is dominated by the CCAA. Cal State San Marcos leads the rankings at No. 1, followed by Concordia – the lone non-CCAA school in the top 6 – at No. 2, Chico State at No. 3, Dominguez Hills at No. 4, Sonoma State at No. 5 and Cal State Monterey Bay at No. 6.
Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 in the regional poll are Azusa Pacific at No. 7, Biola at No. 8, Northwest Nazarene at No. 9 and Saint Martin's at No. 10.
Additionally, CSUDH received votes in this week's NFCA Top 25 poll with fellow NCAA West Region schools in CSUSM (No. 8), Concordia (No. 11) and Chico State (No. 24) also seeing their names on the list.
While the Toros were on their well-deserve bye weekend, they watched the Seawolves leap over them for third place by one game. While the Toros are on the road at the Otters, the Seawolves will head to Chico to play the Wildcats.
In fact, the Cougars head to Cal Poly Humboldt looking to protect first place against three teams. They lead the Wildcats by one game, three over the Seawolves and four over the Toros. While Dominguez Hills is guaranteed at least the No. 4 seed to the upcoming CCAA Tournament, for the Toros to make the giant leap, they will need to:
- Sweep the Otters, which is fighting for a tournament berth,
- The Seawolves need to take 3-of-4 from the Wildcats,
- And the Cougars must lose all four to the Lumberjacks.
The Toros and Otters open the four-game series Friday at 1 p.m. and then Saturday at 11 a.m.
