Box Score CARSON --
Anthony Accordino smacked his seventh home run of the season to give Cal State Dominguez Hills a 2-1 lead in the 6th, but No. 17 Cal State Monterey Bay replied with one in the 7th and four in the 9th to take a 6-3 come-from-behind win over the Toros on a cool and windy afternoon at Toro Field.
Despite the loss, the Toros stay in 3rd place in the CCAA standings at 21-14, 16-9 CCAA, with 15 games left in the regular season.
The bullpen squandered a solid outing by Toro starter
Dylan Steen, who scattered seven hits in 6.1 innings of work, allowing two runs while fanning four Otter batters against just one walk.
After Accordino gave the hosts the lead, the Otters answered with a solo run in the 7th to the the game at 2-2.
Grant Decatrel, however, untied the game by pulling a 1-0 pitch down the left field line to score
Matt Mecate, who was plunked to open the inning and advanced two bases on a failed pickoff attempt.
That's where the score remained heading into the 9th when the Toro bullpen ran into trouble.
With two out and no one on, a hit batter, free pass and wild pitch to advance the runners gave the Otters life, and the league leaders capitalized after an intentional walk loaded the bases. CSUMB took the lead on a 2RBI single and scored two more on a 2RBI double before reliever
Matt Garcia fanned the final batter he faced to stop the bleeding.
But the damage was done as the Otter bullpen, impervious to the cheers from the CSUDH softball team in attendance after practice, retired the Toros in order in the 9th to preserve the win.
Garcia took the loss in relief with seven different Toros each knocking a hit in the contest.
The two teams play the middle games tomorrow, with first pitch of game one's twinbill set for 12 noon.
