Box Score ARCATA -- Less than 24 hours after completing a thrilling come-from-behind win last night, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros seemingly ran out of gas after an energetic first 20 minutes of play as top-seeded and No. 6 ranked Cal State San Bernardino pulled away after intermission to the tune of a 94-69 win in the final CCAA semifinal match-up of the evening.
The Toros were led by
Chris Seeley's 27 points, but CCAA Newcomer of the Year in Coyote Brandon Knapper was virtually unstoppable, erupting for a game-high 34 points as CSUSB advances to tomorrow's championship game where they'll face Cal State San Marcos.
Much like the first two contests in which just four points separated the two teams in two CSUSB wins, tonight's CCAA semifinal match-up continued that trend early on.
The Toros jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a Seeley jumper to open the scoring and a
Colten Kresl triple on at the 17:17 mark. The Yotes replied with the game's next five points to even the score, providing a harbinger of the back-and-forth action between the two teams for the remainder of the half.
After the Toros took a 12-7 lead, CSUSB went on a 24-11 run to take a 31-23 advantage with 7:18 left in the half, only to have the Toros answer with a 17-10 run of their own to get to within 41-40 entering intermission.
Seeley poured in 12 points in the half, with Kresl and
Jordan Hilstock dropping 11 points each.
Both teams were efficient offensively as the Coyotes drained 47.2% of their shots from the floor, with the Toros right behind at 45.7%.
After intermission, however, the well-rested top seed seemed one step ahead of the Toros, who finished shooting 40.3% but allowed the Coyotes to connect at a 54.3% clip for the game.
The Toros stayed close early, climbing to within four at 51-47 after a Seeley layup at the 16:38 mark, but the Yotes increased their lead to double figures on a Knapper triple two and a half minutes later.
That's where the lead hovered until midway through the half when CSUSB ballooned its 69-57 lead to 78-61 at the 7:15 mark, and to 88-64 at 2:54, all but putting the game away.
Hilstock added 18 in the loss, with Kresl contributing his final 11 points in a Toro uniform after a stellar and award-filled career in cardinal and gold.
