CHICO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team jumped off to a promising start against Chico State, but the 11
th-ranked Wildcats showed who they are as a powerhouse in the ever-so-tough CCAA and used a big run to beat the Toros 77-61 at Acker Gymnasium Thursday night.
Unofficially, the loss will lock the Toros (13-9, 10-6 CCAA) as the No. 5 seed in the CCAA Tournament next week and will play in the 8 p.m. timeslot of the quarterfinal round on Thursday. Their opponent is still up in the air with the final day of the regular-season Saturday determining that. The Toros will face either Cal State San Marcos or Cal State Monterey Bay in the quarterfinal round. The conference will officially announce the seedings at the conclusion of the 7:30 p.m. games.
D'Mauria Jones led the scoring effort for the Toros, scoring 17 points.
Colten Kresl added 15 points while
Chris Seeley had a dozen to go along with his team-leading 10 rebounds.
The Toros ended the night showing 38.6 percent from the field, making 11 field goals in each half.
Malik Duffy ended the night scoring 27 points while Kevin Warren netted 20. The Wildcats hit 40.6 percent of their shots.
The Toros got off to a promising start to the game, opening up with a 9-3 lead four minutes into the game. Chico responded with a 16-4 point run to take a 23-20 lead at the 6:21 mark. The Wildcats added 11 more points after to build a 34-21 lead and never looked back.
Dominguez Hills wraps up the regular season in Turlock to play Stanislaus State at 7:30 p.m.
