Box Score CARSON -- With just four games left in the regular season and the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team sitting in the sixth and final spot to qualify for the upcoming league tournament, the Toros needed to play with a sense of urgency against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay tonight.
And that's exactly what they got after a 70-45 blowout win over the Otters to bring their record to 11-10 overall, and 9-7 in the CCAA. With the win, CSUDH moves into 5th place in the standings with three games left in regulation.
Three Toros scored in double figures, led by
Kelsey Bell's 14 points that included 4-of-8 from downtown as CSUDH pulled down 23 offensive boards compared to just 10 for the visitors.
The Toros got off to a slow start to begin the game, trailing 8-7 with just over five minutes elapsed in the first quarter. That's when Bell took over, hitting a pair of threes in a span of 40 seconds to give the Toros a lead they would not relinquish. Bell's bucket spurred an eventual 16-5 run that saw CSUDH take a 23-12 lead after one.
CSUDH continued to keep the pressure on the Otters, outscoring them 16-11 to take a 39-23 lead entering the half, stretching the cushion to 53-32 after three, all but putting the contest away.
Dawnyel Lair added 12 and
Hosanna Walker 11 in the win, while Lair pulled down 13 boards to give her the game's sole double-double, coming within two assists from earning her first-ever triple double.
The Toros host San Francisco State on Saturday night in the final home game of the regular season, honoring their seniors in a pregame ceremony with Homecoming serving as the backdrop for this late-season showdown.
