Hilstock Nets 17 Points But Saves the Day in the End at Humboldt

ARCATA – Jordan Hilstock scored 17 points and had five rebounds, one of which was critical in the end that led Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 68-65 overtime win over newly-named Cal Poly Humboldt at Lumberjack Arena Thursday.

After the Jacks' (10-11, 4-11 CCAA) tied the game at 62 with 3.1 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, the Toros (10-8, 7-5 CCAA) thought they were going to see the same story happen again in overtime. Dominguez Hills was up 67-65 when a game-winning 3-point attempt by Humboldt was recovered by Hilstock and fouled with 4.6 seconds left. Hilstock would make 1-of-2 free throws and another 3-point attempt by the 'Jacks at the buzzer missed.

The Toros, which had missed two games last weekend after their opponents were placed on COVID-19 protocols, maintains fifth place in the CCAA standings with a .583 win percentage within the conference record, keeping in front of San Francisco State, which beat Stanislaus State to improve to 8-7 with a .533 win percentage.

Dominguez Hills had catching up to do after trailing by as many as 13 two minutes into the second half. The Toros went on an 18-5 run that helped erased that deficit and tie the game for the first time. Neither side had more than a six-point lead from that point on.

It became a revenge win for the Toros after the 'Jacks blew them away in the Torodome last month. After shooting 25 percent against Humboldt at home, the Toros ended their night in Lumberjack Arena hitting 31.5 percent of their shots.

Chris Seeley and DJ Guest each had 10 points with the latter grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Free throws benefited the Toros as they made 16-of-23 on the line while the 'Jacks were 6-of-9.

Dominguez Hills heads south to wine country to play Sonoma State on Saturday. Tipoff is at 3 p.m. The Toros silenced the last-place Seawolves 81-65 at home last month.
