POMONA – The Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball posted two lopsided periods in regulation but it was the Broncos that beat the Toros 71-65 in overtime at Kellogg Arena Thursday evening.
The Toros fall to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA. The Broncos, what looked on the path to being handed their first conference loss, escaped that threat and improve to 3-0 and 6-1 overall.
Both sides had dominate first and second halves. The Toros won the first half, 35-16, and then the Broncos dominated the second half 42-23.
The Toros got off to perhaps their best start in a game this season. Although the Broncos got the first basket, the Toros went on an 18-2 run in the span of 6:30 to build a 20-2 lead midway through the opening period. Dominguez Hills went 12-for-30 from the field including five 3-pointers while the Cal Poly Pomona went 5-for-28 with no treys.
Dominguez Hills built a 41-22 lead three minutes into the second half until Cal Poly Pomona went on a 31-0 stampede to not only retake the lead for the first time since the first basket of the game, but move ahead 53-41 with 5:15 remaining.
The Broncos would stay in front until
Cameron Barry hit a game-tying 3-point basket with 27 seconds left. Dominguez Hills survived a game-winning shot attempt by Cal Poly Pomona and force a third overtime period in the last six meetings between the two intra-county rivals.
Cal Poly Pomona would score 13 points and keep Dominguez Hills without a bucket until a
Jordan Hilstock 3-pointer with 23 seconds left.
Hilstock ended the night scoring 23 points while
DJ Guest dropped in a dozen along with 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Cameron Barry, coming off a 24-point game against Sonoma State last Saturday, was held to 10 points against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Toros shot 37.7 percent from the field while the Broncos hit 39.7 percent of their shots.
Derrick Claxton led the Broncos with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Toros return home for the final three games of 2022, starting with an extremely rare Sunday matchup with defending CCAA champions and 15
th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m.
