Perimeter Defense Keys Toros to 65-50 Win Over Westcliff

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills perimeter defense took center stage tonight against visiting Westcliff University as the Toros held the Warriors to just one make in 12 attempts from behind the arc en route to a 65-50 win Friday night.

CSUDH improves to 4-5 with the win, its second victory in a three-game stretch.

While holding Westcliff to just one 3-point make, CSUDH hit six of its own, with the 15-point difference accounting for the margin in tonight's victory.

The Toros stormed to a 31-18 halftime lead after beginning the game on a 4-0 run, courtesy of Damien Miller and Jordan Hilstock buckets.  Westcliff drew to within three points on three occasions, the last at 17-14, before a Seymour Hunter followed a layup with a flush to bring the Toro lead to seven at 21-14 with 8:35 left in the half.

A DeMorian Lowe freebie gave the Toros their first double-digit lead at 24-14, with a final Hunter dunk with 78 seconds left accounting for the half's final points.

After the break, Hilstock drained another triple to bring CSUDH's cushion to 14, with a Cameron Barry trey pushing the lead to 46-27 with 13:43 left in regulation.

The lead reached 20 at 51-31 on an Isaiah Morris fastbreak layup, only to have the visitors go on a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes to cut their deficit to just nine at 55-46.

Guest, however, connected for a 3-pointer on CSUDH's ensuing possession, spurring an 8-0 run to put the game away in the eventual 65-50 win.

Hilstock added 13 including 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point land, while guard Barry pulled down a team-high seven boards.

As a team, the Toros edged the Warriors in rebounds, steals, and blocks, while committing four fewer turnovers.

CSUDH concludes its non-conference schedule on Monday afternoon, hosting Seattle Pacific for a key in-region matchup in the Torodome.
