IRVINE – Trailing at the start of the second half, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team got on 11-point run early on to take the lead and held off Concordia to a 79-27 non-conference win Tuesday night.
The Toros (2-1) kept the deficit under five points for the first three minutes of the second period.
Eric Watson got a layup that would start an 11-2 momentum to give Dominguez Hills a 55-48 lead with 12 minutes left. The Toros would stay ahead the rest of the way, even leading by as many as 13 points.
David Cheatom went 9-for-15 from the field and made 4-of-5 on the free throw line for a career-high 22 points.
Andre Ball had 14 points and was two rebounds shy from a double-double.
Dominguez Hills had its best shooting nights on the very young season, making 16 baskets in each half while hitting 59.3 percent in the game.
Concordia (1-2), rebranded itself as the Golden Eagles this season, kept pace with Dominguez Hills in the first half, making 15 buckets. The Golden Eagles led for 16:37 in the first half but could only go as far as eight points ahead of the Toros.
The Toros won't see action again until next Tuesday, when they officially open the home schedule against Biola. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of women's basketball's home opener against Lincoln. It will be the final non-conference game before the Toros open the CCAA schedule for five games.
