POMONA – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team put together an impressive run against another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos had to escape Kellogg Arena with a close four-set result (25-23, 13-25, 27-29, 23-25) over the Toros.
The Toros fall to 4-17 overall and 2-12 in the CCAA.
Dominguez Hills had one of its best nights on offense, hitting 23.5 percent for second-best this season. Only the match against Dominican in the season-opening weekend did the Toros perform better on the attack.
Ava Hurry had a double-double night of 15 kills and 10 digs,
Angelina Cabal also achieved that feat with an impressive 35 assists and 10 digs.
While the Toros had three games with 20 attack percentage or higher, the Broncos (17-4, 11-3 CCAA) had better, averaging 34.3 percent. In the second game they only had one attack error.
The Toros led the entire first set. They opened up with a 5-1 lead and maintained it all the way to the finish line. The Broncos did rally late by going on a 6-3 run, including three straight during set point but
Samaya Royal got a kill that gave the Toros a 1-0 match lead.
Dominguez Hills went neck-and-neck with Pomona to start the second round, but the Broncos took complete control of the set using an 8-1 run to take a 14-6 lead.
Trailing 23-17 in the third set, the Toros had an impressive 7-1 rally to tie the game at 24 and force extra serves. After the Broncos got a kill from Erin McFarland for their second set point opportunity, the Toros got back-to-back kills from
Camila Sanchez-Tellez and
Jesi Diekmann to hand the Toros the chance for the win.
Cassie Taylor would record another kill to tie the game at 27 but Pomona got the two points needed to take a 2-1 match lead.
The Toros found themselves in a 5-2 hole to start the fourth game. They rallied to tie the game at 14. The two teams would tie the game four more times after that. The last tie was at 22, when Sanchez-Tellez got a kill and an block by her and Diekmann even the score. The Broncos would win three of the next four serves to take the match win.
Dominguez Hills returns home for the final time in 2022, hosting Cal State San Marcos Friday and Cal State East Bay Saturday. Both are 5 p.m. first serves.
