CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team had one their best performances of the season Friday night. After Cal State San Marcos captured the opening set in the Torodome, the Toros rallied to win three straight to post a 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 29-27, 25-19) victory.
The Toros improve to 5-17 overall and 3-12 in the CCAA. The Cougars, meanwhile, drop to 7-15 overall and 6-9 in conference play.
Dominguez Hills hit 19.1 percent on the attack.
Ava Hurry had a team-best 15 kills while averaging .324.
Jesi Diekmann,
Shelby Saporetti and
Cassie Taylor each had eight kills. Diekmann was also impressive in the front, recording six block assists to cap a 12-point evening.
It was also another impressive night for the Angelinas.
Angelina Cabal made 25 assists while
Angelina Robles had 26.
After the Cougars claimed the first set and started the second with a kill, the Toros ignited a rally to take a 10-3 lead. But the comfortable lead became a stressful one after mistakes allowed the Cougars to get to within one point on two occasions. With Dominguez Hills leading 23-22, the Toros got kills by Hurry and Royal secured them the second set win and even the match.
The third set saw the two teams put together major runs that would cut deficits. The Toros were up 23-20 when the Cougars rallied to win five straight points to setup set point. Each side had a chance at set point and it was the Toros on the second try that rallied three straight serves, two of which were on errors, that gave Dominguez Hills a 2-1 match lead.
San Marcos took a 14-11 lead to start the fourth set. It collapsed when Dominguez Hills went on a 12-4 point run to take a 20-16 lead en route to the set and match point win.
The Toros pull the curtain on the home portion of their 2022 schedule Saturday against Cal State East Bay. Before the 5 p.m. first serve, Dominguez Hills will be honoring six student-athletes playing for the final time at the Torodome.
