Sonoma Rallies in Three to Take Match from Volleyball

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team came within two points in completing the three-set sweep over Sonoma State, but the Seawolves snuck by in that game and won the next two to defeat the Toros (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 4-15) at the Torodome Friday night.

The Toros fall to 3-15 overall and 1-10 in the CCAA. The Seawolves move to 14-5 overall and 7-4 in the conference to keep pace in a very tight CCAA standings.

Dominguez Hills not only had great momentum on the attack, but was capitalizing on Sonoma's mistakes. In just the first set, the Toros hit 20.8 percent with only two errors while the Seawolves made 11 mistakes to finish with a .061. By the end of the night, Sonoma hit 17.4 percent while the Toros fell to 10.5 percent.

Camila Sanchez-Tellez recorded 10 kills on the evening, Shelby Saporetti had nine. Jesi Diekmann had a strong night on the defensive side, making seven blocks.

The start of the match saw both teams within proximity of each other until Dominguez Hills went on a 10-2 run to take a 15-6 lead and establish control of the set. Sonoma got to within five points but the Toros got five of those points back immediately after to cruise to a game win.

Neither side let the second set slip away from them. Tied at 21 points, the Toros went on to win four of the next five rallies to take the second round.

The Toros had led for a majority of the third set until the Seawolves tied the game at 19. After both sides tied again at 23, the Seawolves took advantage of an attack error and a kill by Kiana Richardson to salvage a game.

Sonoma had a 16-15 lead midway through the fourth set. It went on a 5-1 run to take complete control of the game to force a deciding set, which it cruised to a 12-3 lead en route to the magic number of 15.

Dominguez Hills wraps up the homestand Saturday with Cal Poly Humboldt visiting for a 5 p.m. first serve.
