CARSON – With its backs against the wall in the fourth set, the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team turned the tide and rallied to beat Cal Poly Humboldt in five sets (25-15, 19-25, 22-25, 28-26, 15-7) Saturday at the Torodome to end a 10-match losing skid.
The Toros improve to 4-15 overall and 2-10 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, fall to 2-13 overall while staying in the cellar with Chico State in the conference standings at 1-11.
Ava Hurry and
Jenna Sandall both had career nights on the attack, recording 19 and 14 kills, respectively. Both of them also had a double-double performance on the digs side, with Hurry making 17, Sandall 11.
Angelina Cabal had 28 assists while
Mya Tillman reached a personal-best 24.
The Toros ended the evening hitting 26 percent on the attack, including a 45.9 result in the first set.
After Dominguez Hills cruised through the first set, Humboldt regrouped and took the next two rounds to take a 2-1 match lead. The Jacks had a 17-11 lead in the fourth set, but the Toros went on a 7-1 run to get the deficit down to one. The Toros tied the game at least twice, the first at 20 and the second at 23. Each side had a set point opportunity in extra rallies.
Cassie Taylor got a kill and a set error allowed Dominguez Hills to force a deciding set.
Although Humboldt started the fifth game leading 3-0, Dominguez Hills began an 8-2 momentum to take an 8-5 lead. The Toros then went on a 7-1 run to complete the rally.
Dominguez Hills will head towards the Inland Empire to face Cal State San Bernardino Friday and Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. First serve against the Yotes is at 5 p.m.
