POMONA –
Bailey Fuches recorded 16 kills, 17 assists and 13 digs for a rare triple-double,
Nicole Peery had 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, but the valiant effort wasn't enough as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team fell to Concordia (Calif.) in five sets (16-25, 29-27, 28-26, 23-25, 12-15) to wrap up their participation in Cal Poly Pomona's Bronco Fall Classic Saturday.
The loss becomes a stinger as the Toros out-hit the Eagles .172 to .167. Fuches led the effort for the Toros with a .483 mark.
After dropping the first set, Dominguez Hills found itself trailing 19-11 in the second set until an 8-1 run sliced the deficit to one. Both sides forced each other to play in extra rallies until the Toros got kills from Peery and Fuches to win the set and tie the match 1-1.
The third set saw a mix of neck-and-neck battle and a moment at certain points. Much like set two, the third round went into extra rallies and it was
Jenna Sandall and an attack error by the Eagles that put the Toros ahead 2-1 in the match.
Concordia found itself leading the fourth set 16-9 until Dominguez Hills answered back with eight consecutive points to take a 17-16 lead. The lead never grew, and Concordia won eight of the next 12 serves to force a deciding set.
Tied at 11 in the fifth round, the Eagles went on to win 4-of-5 rallies to claim the match.
The Toros open up the Torodome for the first time since March 2020 on Thursday when they host a group of schools that make up a four-institution-hosting SoCal Freeway Challenge. Fellow CCAA member Stanislaus State takes on Azusa Pacific at 3 p.m. followed by the Toros clashing with the Warriors in non-conference play at 7:30 p.m.
