CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team cruised to a set one win but Humboldt State responded by winning the next three rounds as the Toros suffered a 3-1 setback (25-18, 19-25, 20-25, 19-25) to the 'Jacks at the Torodome Saturday afternoon.
Angie Cabal, playing in her second match of the season, led the effort for the Toros by making 18 assists and reaching for 11 digs.
Bailey Fuches had 11 sets, had 14 saves and came two kills short from her second triple-double of the season. Jenna Sandal and
Nicole Peery combined for 22 kills.
The first set was the Toros best performance on the day. They hit committed one error on the attack and hit .423 on the opening bout. After the 'Jacks collected two points to tie the set at 17 all, the Toros put together a 5-1 momentum to clinch the game 25-18.
While Dominguez Hills started the second set with a 5-2 lead, Humboldt State responded by winning seven of the next eight serves to move ahead 10-6. The Toros couldn't recover from that.
The Toros was able to tie the third set at four, but the 'Jacks went on a 7-2 run to take complete control of the round. Dominguez found itself trailing 7-4 and did slice the deficit to 10-9 midway through, but a five-point run by Humboldt State set the tone of both the game and match.
The two sides will meet again on the regular-season weekend finale in Arcata on November 11. But until then, the Toros will leave Southern California for the first time this season starting with a visit to San Francisco State Friday at 5 p.m. Please follow the guidelines set by both San Francisco County and SF State.
