Box Score CARSON -- Down 16 points with 6:08 left in regulation, Cal State Dominguez Hills roared back to take a one-point lead after one D'Mauria made free throw, and survived after
Colten Kresl interceped a Western Washington pass into the front court with :02 left to give the Toros their first win of the year in a thrilling 61-60 decision over the Vikings.
Despite shooting just 33.3% from the field, the Toros nailed 73.1% of their free throw attempts compared to just 54.2 for WWU and made eight fewer turnovers in the win.
Jordan Hilstock led all scorers with 19 points, while Jones added 10 and
Hunter Seymour 11 boards to lead all rebounders.
After taking a 38-26 lead, the Vikings pushed their advantage to 58-42 on a Luke Lovelade layup at the 6:08 mark.
That's when the Toros began chipping away, beginning with a pair of
Isaiah Morris freebies that cut CSUDH's deficit to 14.
After two more CSUDH made free throws, Kresl drained three of his nine points on the night to cut WWU's lead to single digits, before Hilstock shaved three more points off by converting a +1.
Jones added a pair of free throws to make it 58-54 with 2:50 to go, and a Hilstock triple made it a one-point game 43 seconds later.
CSUDH took its first lead since early in the first half on a Seymour old-fashioned 3-point play after an emphatic flush, before Jalen Green tied the score at 60-60 with just 25 ticks left in regulation.
After a Toro timeout, Jones converted one of two free throws after being fouled with three seconds left, setting up one final chance for WWU.
Kresl had other ideas, however, picking off a Viking pass to the front court to seal the win.
The Toros travel to Oakland next week to battle Holy Names on Friday, with tip-off set for 2 pm.
