CARSON -- Senior guard
Colten Kresl poured in 21 points as Cal State Dominguez Hills kicked off the 2021-22 season at home, but visiting Simon Fraser connected on nearly 40% of its attempts from floor while winning the battle of the boards en route to a 63-52 win over the Toros on a warm Friday night in the Torodome.
Chris Seeley (pictured) added 10 to round out the double-figure scorers for CSUDH, while David Penney's 19 points led three SFU players with at least 10 points on the night.
The teams split the game's first 16 points, with a Kresl jumper at the 11:15 mark giving the Toros a 14-11 edge. SFU, however, would go on a 21-10 run over the half's final minutes to give the visitors a 32-24 lead entering the break.
SFU continued to keep the hosts at arm's length midway through the second half, until a pair of
DJ Guest free throws brought CSUDH to within 39-32 with 13:03 left in regulation.
The Leaf, however, answered back, pushing the margin to 50-38 four minutes later, until a Kresl triple with 5:57 narrowed CSUDH's deficit to just six at 53-47, and a pair of Kresl free throws at the 3:47 mark shrinking the gap to 53-49.
That would be as close as the Toros would get, however, as SFU went on a 7-0 run to put the game away, eventually winning by 11.
Hunter Seymour tied for game-high rebounding honors with nine, while
D'Mauria Jones and
Andre Ball each assisted on three buckets.
CSUDH resumes action tomorrow night, taking on Western Washington for a 7:30 pm first tip.
