CARSON --
Patricia Rubio-Martinez and her Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer teammates found Toro Stadium a welcome sight this afternoon as the senior midfielder connected for both scores in a convincing 2-0 win over visiting Humboldt State.
The Toros picked up their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win of the season and improve to 4-5 overall and 1-2 CCAA, while HSU falls to 3-3-4 overall, and 0-1-2 in league action.
Although the hosts rattled off 11 shots in the first 45 minutes of action, HSU keeper Alexis Aguilar repelled all six that went to frame, keeping the game scoreless heading into intermission.
That all changed just 15 minutes into the second half as
Vanessa Campos took a throw in in front of the Toro bench and lifted her pass towards the goalmouth. With Rubio-Martinez simultaneously maneuvering behind her defender before shielding her from the ball, she flicked the incoming pass past Aguilar's right at the 60:28 mark for the game's first score.
Â
Rubio-Martinez was at it again 13 minutes later as she positioned herself 13 yards in front of HSU's goal and collected a
Nia Thompson ball from about 35 yards away.
Â
Diving to her left to meet the ball in front of the Jack defender, Rubio-Martinez angled her header to the keeper's left, rendering her motionless as the ball lofted past to account for the game's final tally.
Keeper
Alyssa Newsom picked up the shutout win with three saves as CSUDH's offense tallied 17 shots to just 10 for the Jacks.
Dominguez Hills continues its homestand on Sunday, hosting Chico State at 11:30 am. Prior to the contest, the Toros will honor alumni from the 2020 season who were not able to compete in their 2020 season, nor enjoy their "Senior Day" festivities.
