CARSON -- A seemingly innocent through ball headed towards the front of the Cal State Dominguez Hills goalmouth resulted in disaster as it nicked
Ivette Felix's arm in the box, allowing visiting Chico State to attempt and convert its penalty kick attempt in the Wildcats' 1-0 win on a sunny Sunday morning.
The loss brings the Toros to 4-6 overall, and 1-3 in CCAA play, while the visitors improve to 6-2-2, 2-1-1 CCAA.
The two teams combined for 12 shots in the first 45 minutes of action, with CSUDH keeper
Alyssa Newsom credited with three saves and counterpart Emma Hofmann repeling the lone shot on goal.
That's where the score remained until the 77th minute when the Wildcat defender sent her shot into the box and off Felix's arm.
Jordan Doukakis did the honors, sending a low line drive past a diving Newsom's left for the eventual game-winner.
An evenly played game, the Toros saved five shots compared to Chico's six, with the teams enjoying four corners apiece.
Prior to the game, the Toros honored five super seniors in Mayela Medina,
Karina Banda,
Sofia Litendahl,
Ruth-Maria Soto and
Sara Kattainen, who were not able to participate in their 2020 season or senior day festivities day due to the pandemic. Kattainen was also presented the 2019-20 Presidential Award, the most prestigious award in CSUDH Athletics, by Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics
Dena Freeman-Patton.
CSUDH takes to the road next weekend, beginning with a Thursday tilt at Sonoma State.
