Kresl Joins 1,000-Point Club as Toros Move Closer to CCAA Tourney Berth

SAN FRANCISCO – February 27, 2020 will be a night Colten Kresl will never forget.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball junior guard scored a career-high 38 points at San Francisco State Thursday night to become the 11th player in program history to earn 1,000 career points in the Toros' 82-67 beating over the Gators in the Swamp. In addition, Kresl also made eight 3-pointers to set a new program single-season record with 79.

Kresl has been on fire as college basketball wraps up the regular season this week. He has scored 145 points in the last five games, while bringing his season average up to 16.4 points per game which moves him to seventh in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Now that he's joined Dominguez Hills' century club, he will now begin the path of chasing history starting with Justin Sadler (2013-17), who scored 1,095 in his illustrious Toro career.

It was a good night in the City by the Bay for the Toros, who at 13-14 overall and 9-12 in the CCAA are one game away from clinching a spot to the conference tournament next week. A Toro win at Sonoma State on Saturday (3 p.m. tipoff) locks up the seventh seed. The Toros can also clinch if either Cal State LA or Cal State San Marcos lose on Saturday. The Golden Eagles travel across the Golden Gate Bridge to meet the Gators while the Cougars have a tough matchup with the CCAA regular-season champions No. 4 UC San Diego at home. The top eight teams qualify for the CCAA Tournament.

It was a perfect night for Kresl on the shooting, going 10-of-19 overall, 8-of-14 from the 3-point line while making a perfect 10-of-10 on free throws. He also had four assists and steals each while grabbing three rebounds.

Despite shooting 52 percent (29-of-56), no one else from the Dominguez Hills side reached double figures in points. Wonder Smith had nine points to lead the effort.

The Gators (9-19, 6-15 CCAA) kept the deficit under 10 points for a majority of the first half until a 16-6 Toro run gave Dominguez Hills a 41-25 lead into intermission. Kresl scored 10 of those points during the momentum.

SF State jumped out of the gate frozen, shooting 24 percent (6-of-25) in the first half. The Gators ended the night hitting 35.6 percent (21-of-59) of their shots. DJ Sylvester had 18 points to lead the group.
