Toros Lock Up Seventh Seed to CCAA Tourney with Win Over Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK – Much like the meaning of Leap Day, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team will be leaping into March as the seventh seed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament after the Toros handled Sonoma State 75-59 in the Wolves' Den to wrap up the regular-season Saturday.

Although the win would have sealed a postseason berth, the Toros' ticket was punched before their game against the Seawolves was finished when both Cal State San Marcos and Cal State LA lost to UC San Diego and SF State, respectively, earlier.

It is the fourth straight time the Toros (14-14, 10-12 CCAA) will be playing in the CCAA Tournament. Dominguez Hills' eyes will be locked in on the CCAA Network tonight to see which team – Cal State San Bernardino, Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona – takes the second seed and host the Toros Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. The Coyotes host Cal State East Bay, the Broncos host Cal State Monterey Bay and the Wildcats are on the road at Stanislaus State. All are 7:30 p.m. tipoff times.

The CCAA will announce the seedings after the final buzzer of the regular season is sounded. Tipoff times will also be announced at the same time.

Five different Toros had reached double figures in the Toros' win over the Seawolves (5-22, 4-18 CCAA). Wonder Smith had 14 points, Alex Garcia had a dozen and Brandon Jackson, Andrew Whitsett and Colten Kresl each had 11.

Dominguez Hills finished the matchup shooting 40 percent (24-of-60) while holding Sonoma State to 36.8 percent (21-of-57).

Both sides each finished with 36 total rebounds. Kresl and Whitsett each had eight to lead the Toros in that category.

Three-point shooting proved to be a major factor for the Toros, going 13-of-35 from beyond the arc. The Seawolves, meanwhile, went 4-for-20.

The Toros had led from start to finish, leading by as many as 24 near the end of regulation. Dominguez Hills took a 30-23 lead into intermission.
