CARSON – Although classes were missed on both sides of the dugout, the Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino baseball teams had perfect weather Monday to make-up Saturday's washed-out game, which the Coyotes won 3-2 on a leadoff home run in the 10
th inning to split the California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
The Toros bats were practically silent today, collecting only three hits. They did however draw four walks on the day. The Yotes, meanwhile had nine hits and five free passes.
Dominguez Hills opened up the game with
Aaron Greenfield drawing a walk. He stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the game's first run on
Angel Estrada's base hit through the right side.
San Bernardino responded in the third inning on starter
Nathan Ortiz, who surrendered a one-out double and two RBI singles to give up a 2-1 lead. The Toros did answer back in the fifth inning when
Nate Ade led off with a single, advanced to second on
Kyle Willman's successful sacrifice bunt and scored on
Nick Henry's double down the right field line. It was the sixth RBI and fourth extra base hit in the series for Henry.
Humberto Chiquito was excellent in relief, throwing three shutout innings while giving up a hit and three walks.
Jacob Paradine was the victim in the 10
th inning when cleanup hitter Andrew Talkington crushed a 2-1 pitch down the right field line to break the 2-2 tie.
Tyler Williams went seven innings for the Coyotes, striking out six along the way.
The Toros will make two trips up the 710 freeway to face crosstown rivals Cal State LA beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles are coming off having been swept by the reigning CCAA Tournament champions Cal Poly Pomona last weekend, dipping their record to 4-8 overall, 3-5 in the CCAA.
