Garnett Strikes Out Career-High 10 in Win Over No. 8 UC San Diego

CARSON – In his final appearance of 2019, Tristan Garnett made it a memorable one as the sophomore recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings and Spencer Hereford halted a late rally to preserve Cal State Dominguez Hills' 7-5 win over No. 8 UC San Diego at Toro Field Friday.

The Toros wrap the home side of the schedule against the first-place Tritons Saturday at 3 p.m. with Senior Day to be held 30 minutes prior.

TOP PERFORMERS
Tristan Garnett – WP, 7 IP, 10 SO (Career-high), 2 BB, 1 R, 3 H
Spencer Hereford – SV, 1.2 IP, 2 SO, 0 R, 0 H
Aaron Greenfield – 2-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI

WHAT HAPPENED?
- The Toros wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Jose Jimenez and Pierson Loska scored in the first run and Aaron Greenfield knocked in two more with a triple to right to give Dominguez Hills a 4-0 lead.
- Greenfield got his second RBI in the fifth inning, when he singled to left center to score in Jeremy Ciolek to give CSUDH a 7-1 lead. He has recorded seven RBIs in four of the last five games.
- Garnett may have thrown a season-high 123 pitches but was dominant against the top team in the West Region, striking out the career-high 12 batters and giving up one run on three hits.
- The Tritons, still trying to lock up the No. 1 seed to the CCAA Tournament with seven games remaining, had a rally going in the eighth against Connor Dreyer. They would get three singles in that inning to score four runs and cut the deficit to two. Hereford came into the game inheriting runners at the corners and the potential go-ahead run at the plate with one out, got the Tritons to hit into an inning-ending double play on the second pitch to preserve the 7-5 lead.
