TURLOCK – Coming off a disappointing 4-1 game one loss to Stanislaus State, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team went with a different lineup for game two. Along with many defensive miscues by the Warriors, the combination of the Toros' bats and
Ian Codina's brilliant performance on the mound led them to an 11-2 rout Saturday at Warrior Field.
GAME 1: STAN 4, CSUDH 1
TOP PERFORMERS
Jeremy Ciolek – 2-for-4
Joe Canepa – 1-for-3, RBI double
Drake Pingel – LP, 5.1 IP, 2 SO
WHAT HAPPENED?
- The Toros (15-26, 14-25 CCAA) quickly went to work on Warrior starter Tyler Murphy.
Kai Gomez led off with a walk and scored all the way from first when Canepa crushed a double to the right centerfield fence to give the Toros their first lead in the series. Canepa ended up at third on a wild pitch but was left stranded.
- The Warriors (25-17, 21-15 CCAA) also responded right away in the first inning against Pingel. Stan State got the first two runners on a single and a walk and scored on back-to-back one-out singles.
- Pingel would eventually settle down after the rough first inning, putting zeroes on the board up until the sixth inning.
- The offense couldn't find a way to break through against Murphy after the first inning, leaving runners as far as second base on two different occasions.
GAME 2: CSUDH 11, STAN 2
TOP PERFORMERS
Ian Codina – WP, CG (1
st in career), 7 SO (career-high), 2 ER, 3 BB
Jeremy Ciolek – 1-for-4, HR (1

Pierson Loska – 1-for-4, RBI, R
WHAT HAPPENED?
- After Warrior freshman starter Ryan Tinsley retired the first two batters, his defense let him down as when back-to-back errors on the left side of the infield produced two unearned runs for the Toros.
Aaron Greenfield punished the Warriors for the error with an RBI single to give them the 2-0 lead.
- Errors would continue to haunt the Warriors in the second inning.
Kaelan Crisosto,
Angel Estrada and
Justin Morris each singled to lead off the inning and Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to score in the third run. Another poor throw by the third baseman allowed
Jose Jimenez to reach base and load the bases again. Estrada would score on a fielder's choice and Morris found his way home on a wild pitch to give the Toros a 5-0 lead and tab the Warriors with four unearned runs.
- While the Toros added two more runs in the fourth, one offensive highlight was in the sixth when Ciolek crushed a three-run jack for the sophomore's first homer in his career.
- Codina, making his fourth start, set new highs along the way. The senior tossed all seven innings and struck out a career-high seven. The two runs he gave up was in the third inning, which was a two-run shot by Michael Wyatt.
