Sonoma Rallies Late to Salvage Series Finale from Toros

CARSON – After taking the first three games of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team came up short from the sweep as Sonoma State scored five runs in the eighth to take the final contest 6-3 at Toro Field Sunday.

TOP PERFORMERS
Jesse Villalobos – ND, 5.1 IP, 4 SO, 1 ER
Joe Canepa – 1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI
Domenic Colacchio – 1-for-4, RBI, 3B

WHAT HAPPENED?
- Already trailing 1-0 going into the third, Dominguez Hills was about to go down with one runner left on base until a passed ball on a swinging strike three gave the Toros life. Canepa and Colacchio punished the Seawolves for the miscue by slugging in three runs on a double and a triple, respectively, to move ahead 3-1.
- The lead would hold until the eighth inning. Sonoma would go through the lineup to put five runs, two unearned, to take a 6-3 lead.
- The Toros would go down very quietly after the third inning, being limited to only two singles and three walks.
- Even though he received a no-decision, Villalobos reached new heights in his Toro career by going a season-high 5.1 innings with four strikeouts on 94 pitches.

POSTGAME NOTES
- Despite the loss, the Toros win the series with the Seawolves for the first time since 2015, when they swept the four-game series at Toro Field.

UP NEXT?
The Toros will be challenged in the City by the Bay next weekend when they visit No. 20 and first-place San Francisco State. Game one of the series begins Friday at 3 p.m.
