CARSON –
Andrew Whitsett scored nine points but three of those came up big as it helped propel the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team to a 68-64 home-opening win over Fresno Pacific in front of a roaring 160 crowd Thursday night.
The Toros (1-2), who had to keep pace with the Sunbirds (0-3) the entire game, completed the rally with 18 seconds left when Whitsett got a successful layup along with the and-1 free throw to put the Toros ahead 66-64.
Wonder Smith picked up a pair of free throws to provide the breathing room.
Nick Kornieck scored 18 points in his Torodome debut while
Colten Kresl dropped 16. On the other side, Jonathan Brown and Aamondae Coleman combined for 29 points to lead Fresno Pacific.
Both teams shot 43 percent from the field.
It was a balancing effort in the rebounding department for Dominguez Hills, which won that category 38-25. Four different Toros each had six boards while four more each had three.
Neither team had led by more than seven points in the game. The Sunbirds had a 36-35 going into halftime.
The Toros resume their home schedule Saturday taking on the NAIA's Saint Katherine on a rare 11 a.m. tipoff.
