Comeback Complete at Chico State

CHICO – After falling in the first two sets, Cal State Dominguez Hills rallied and forced extra rally serves in the deciding game to sneak past CCAA North Division leaders Chico State (13-25, 20-25, 25-16, 26-21, 19-17) at Acker Gymnasium Friday night.

The Toros (11-6, 4-6 CCAA) had to shrug off a sluggish start, hitting .017 after two games. They went on to mark a 37.5 attack percentage in the next three rounds while keeping the Wildcats (10-9, 6-5 CCAA) to nearly 20 percent.

Senior Taylor Benitez-Fanslow continues to build a resumé for postseason accolades after hitting 26 percent with 13 kills and 17 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Rylee Brown, another name on the rise, had a productive day with 16 kills and eight digs.

After leading the entire third set and winning five of the final seven serves in the fourth game, the deciding set proved to be a see-saw battle. Trailing 17-16, Benitez-Fanslow got the point on the attack to tie the game and a Angie Cabal service ace followed by a Samaya Royal kill sealed the come-from-behind win.

It was the third time the Toros played to a deciding set, with the last two being in San Francisco against Concordia (Ore.) and Fresno Pacific in the D2 West Region Showcase.

Dominguez Hills travels south to the Central Valley to wrap the brief road trip at Stanislaus State Saturday at 7 p.m.
