2018 Squad Scores Early and Often in 13-6 Win Over Alumni

CARSON -- The 2018 Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team scored in each of the first five innings and benefited from 5.0 strong innings by starter Joe Mercado to take a spirited 13-6 win over former Toro greats on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon on Toro Field.

The 30th Annual Robert L. Wing Memorial Alumni Game featured former All-American and current Toronto Blue Jay Kevin Pillar making a return to his alma mater, taking batting practice and roaming the outfield with members of the current squad during pregame warmups before seeing action in the field to begin the 4th inning.

Esteban Ortega led the Toros with a 3-for-4 performance, belting a double and scoring twice.  John Gonzalez supplied the power for the hosts, belting a 2-run blast as part of his 2-hit day, and was joined by Kaelan Crisosto and Trevor North, who contributed two hits each in the win.

With the score 4-1 heading into the fourth inning, the 2018 squad scored five times to take a commanding 9-1 lead, benefiting from two hits, two walks and a hit batter.  After the alumni squad answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame, the Toros added four more to put the game out of reach, with a pair of hit batters and three baseknocks pushing across the runs.

The alumni made it closer with two runs in the fifth and two in the ninth, the latter pair coming on an Abel Medina line drive over the right field fence to account for the final scoring.

Thirty-one alumni joined in on the fun, including Juan Avena, Brennan Bernardino, Joe Bresson, Kevin Brown, Brady Conlan, Anthony Cortez, Ethan Etchebarren, David Fair, Candelario Flores, Fernando Gallegos, Jeff Gilstrap, Jeff Gogue, Daniel Hartman, Parker Hokuf, Octavio Lara, Kevin Lenik, Carlos Leyva, Danny Matienzo, Medina, Bret Montgomery, Matthew Montgomery, Nick Morelli, Brian Nostaja, Johnny Palmer, Pillar, Brandon Polizzi, Bubby Rossman, Danny Torres, Phillip van Doren, Kamran Young and Shane Youngdale, as well as alumni coach George Wing, whose father is the namesake of today's contest.

Before the start of the game, Pillar spoke to the 2018 team about his experience as a Toro, what motivated him, and the importance of taking care of business in the classroom and building relationships with everyone who is in a position to help, especially coaches, teammates, the athletic staff and professors.  He then pointed to his fellow alums, urging the Toros to talk to them to gain as much knowledge as they could about past experiences, and to keep the hunger going.

Pillar also left some of his bats for the team.
