CSUDH Drops 65-58 Decision at Cal Poly Pomona

Pomona - The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team fell on the road to Cal Poly Pomona by a final score of 65-58 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action, Thursday night at Kellogg Arena. CSUDH narrowly climbed out of a 14-point hole, cutting it down to four with less than a minute left, but couldn't get over the hump.

The Toros drop to 8-12 overall and 5-8 in conference play. The Broncos remain at the top of the CCAA standings at 10-2 and improve to 13-3 overall.

Malcolm Johnson recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds, five of those coming on the offensive end. Matt Hayes scored a game-high 18 points on six 3-pointers made and dished out four assists.

CSUDH got three treys from Hayes to start the contest and grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 11-7. CPP responded and took the lead, 15-13, on a dunk from William Christmas. The Broncos would lead the rest of the game from there.

The Toros cut the deficit to one, 28-27, on Mikey Hatfield's 3-pointer, but the Broncos stretched the margin to seven at halftime, 34-27.

CPP kept the onslaught going in the second half and took its biggest advantage of the game, 44-30 with 14:29 remaining. CSUDH cut the gap to four, 62-58, with 47 seconds remaining after consecutive treys from Hatfield and Hayes, but it was not enough as the Broncos ultimately prevailed by seven.

The Toros will have a day off before traveling to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
