CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team got off to a promising start in the first two games but crosstown rivals Cal State LA turned the tide around and spoiled the Toros home opener in five sets (25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 20-25, 8-15) Saturday night.
Tati Yandall got her fourth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 16 digs while
Claire Autry led all Toros with 16 kills and hit .382 on the night.
Cathryn Lopez returned to the floor for the first time since the season opener and collected a team-high 17 digs.
Rylee Kiger dished out 22 assists while freshman
Jordan Ramirez made a career-high 17.
Cal State L.A.'s Karla Santos had what should be a career night with 30 kills and 26 digs.
The Toros (5-6, 1-2 CCAA) started off having outslugged the Golden Eagles (7-4, 3-0 CCAA) by intermission, hitting .286 in the first round and .350 in the second. CSULA hit under .100 in both sets.
Following a first set win, Dominguez Hills jumped right of the gate to take a 5-1 to start the second. Even though the Golden Eagles got to within one after that, the Toros won 6-of-7 points to take an 18-11 lead.
Set three was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams but it was the Golden Eagles that went on a 7-1 run that gave them the set win.
Los Angeles was able to take control of the fourth set using a six-point momentum to take a 12-7 lead. The Toros did get as close as a one-point deficit but couldn't get in front. Even they started off with a service error to start the deciding set, the Golden Eagles would get in front of the Toros and never looked back.
CSUDH will face a bigger test Tuesday when they face No. 9 Cal Baptist. First serve is at 7 p.m.
