Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Pioneers

HAYWARD – Brandon Polizzi had four hits as the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team split the CCAA series-opening twinbill with Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers tallied four runs in the seventh to claim game one 8-3 while the Toros got three extra runs in the ninth to hold on and win the evening cap 8-4.

Both teams return to Pioneer Field for the rubber game Sunday at 11 a.m.

Game 1 – CSUEB 8, CSUDH 3
The Pioneers struck first with three runs in the second inning. CSUDH brought the deficit to one in the fourth. Parker Hokuf led off with a home run and after Miguel Castaneda doubled to right, he scored the second run on Nick Morelli's single to center.

After CSUEB scored a run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, CSUDH cuts the lead back to one when a error in the outfield allowed Polizzi to score from second.

The Pioneers took complete control of the game with a four-run seventh inning.

Joe Bresson struck out five and allowed three earned runs in 6.1 innings.

Game 2 – CSUDH 8, CSUEB 4
The Toros were the first team to get on the board in the second inning. Daryl Donerson hit a one-out single, Morelli drew a walk and Evan Yeager singled to drive in Donerson for the first run. Polizzi brought in Morelli with a sacrifice fly and Yeager scored the third run on a passed ball.

CSUDH scored two more in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles from John Soteropulos and Hokuf to take a 5-1 lead.

The Pioneers did get a run each in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make it a one-run deficit.

But the Toros did get breathing room in the ninth inning. Polizzi led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt and scored on Esteban Ortega's base hit. Donerson would drive in two more with a single to right center, giving CSUDH an 8-4 lead.

Nick Suniga allowed two runs in five innings of work. Cy Scott would earn the save after throwing 3.1 innings.
