Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Toros Edge NCAA Division II's Best Defensive Team for Key CCAA Win

ROHNERT PARK – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team picked up a crucial victory against NCAA Division II's best defensive team in Sonoma State on its home court.

Vincent Golson made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left and the Toros prevented the Seawolves from hitting a game-tying 3 at the buzzer to escape the Wolves' Den with a 58-55 win Saturday night.

The victory improves the Toros to 9-9, but more importantly, they can earn a berth to the CCAA Championship by winning one of the two games remaining. With the Toros next opponent Thursday, Cal State San Marcos, still ineligible for postseason play for one more year, CSUDH holds on to the fifth spot to the tournament that begins March 28.

After being decimated on its home floor against Sonoma State last month, CSUDH made an improvement in Rohnert Park, shooting 41.2 percent from the field. It was the bench that led the Toros in scoring. Glenn Baral had 14 points and Golson had 13.

Jonathan Nichols had gathered 10 of the 28 Toro rebounds. Deondre Otis had nine to finish right behind him.

Sonoma State had entered the weekend leading the nation in scoring defense (allowing just 56.6 points per game) and defensive field goal percentage (37.9). But it was the Toros who had held the Seawolves to 38 percent from the field. Jimmy Golden dropped 19 points, including 11 free throws, on the night.

The Toros had also committed only 10 turnovers on the night.

It was the Seawolves who had led for a majority of the first half, having led by as many as eight mid-way through. The Toros had gotten themselves back in the game igniting a 10-2 run to take a 32-28 lead at halftime.

Sonoma State had got to within one with 1:28 left before Golson's pair of free throws at the 16 second mark provided some extra breathing room for the Toros.

CSUDH returns to the Torodome one last time Thursday against Cal State San Marcos at 7:30 p.m. Before tipoff the Toros will honor seniors Justin Sadler and Golson.
