Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 17 Gators Sneak by Men's Basketball with 9-Point Run in Second Half

SAN FRANCISCO – Facing perhaps the toughest weekend in the CCAA schedule, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team kept pace with 17th-ranked San Francisco State, but the Gators got on a run that allowed them to sneak by the Toros 78-68 in The Swamp Friday night.

Despite the loss, the Toros are still holding on to the fifth seed to the CCAA championship. CSUDH is currently 8-9 in conference play with three games remaining while sixth-seed holder Cal State LA, following a loss to Sonoma State, fell to 8-10 with two games left. Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State both are 7-10.

Neither side had led by more than six until the 7:01 mark in the second half. It was when SFSU would run away using a 9-point run in 2:17 to take a 61-53 lead.

The Toros did get to within five following an old-fashioned 3-point play by Vincent Golson with 1:40 to go.

Justin Sadler, Khalil Bedart-Ghani and Golson, who made a return to the floor after missing five games, each had 15 points.

Both teams had identical numbers on paper. The Gators had edged the Toros in rebounding 30-28 while the Toros had fewer turnovers (11-12). The only standout was 3-pointers made, in which the Gators won that category 8-5.

The Gators had a 6-point lead with 4:36 remaining in the first period but the Toros erased it and led 28-27 behind back-to-back field goals by Golson followed by a Jonathan Nichols 3.

Derrick Brown got the last bucket to give the Gators a 29-28 lead at halftime.

The Toros had led by as many as three in the second half.

CSUDH's weekend in the Bay Area doesn't get any easier as it faces perhaps the best defensive team in the CCAA in Sonoma State Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Seawolves knocked out the Toros 70-55 in Carson last month.
