CARSON –
Gabriel Hicks scored 22 points and Deshay Gipson had 18 to give the freshmen new personal bests in the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team's 97-81 win over NAIA Division I member San Diego Christian Saturday night.
While the Toros have won three straight games to improve to 5-6, they also complete the non-conference schedule 3-4.
It was indeed a career night for both Hicks and Gipson, who both came into the game averaging a combined 8.1 points per game this season. Hicks had seven points at halftime while Gipson was at five at the break.
Deondre Otis also had a new career best in points, dropping 14.
The Toros had shot a season-high 63 percent from the field and was one 3-pointer short from reaching the dozen mark set in the double-overtime thriller at San Francisco State last weekend.
In addition, the Toros dominated the Hawks (2-6) in the rebounding column, 37-24.
Ralph Agee went to the glass 10 times.
San Diego Christian's leading scorer Derek Novsek finished with 26 points and Hayden Frederick had 23.
The Toros had led for nearly the entire game. Trailing 47-42 at intermission, the Hawks did get to within one five minutes into the second half. After that the Toros went on a 22-0 run in nearly six minutes to take a 76-53 lead.
With the non-conference slate complete, Dominguez Hills will now turn its undivided attention to the 17 games remaining California Collegiate Athletic Association. That begins Thursday with the red-hot Cal Poly Pomona. Tipoff is after the women's game at 7:30 p.m.
