Nichols Hits Another Game-Winning Basket to Top UC San Diego

CARSON – Jonathan Nichols came right in the nick of time again as his jumper with 3.7 seconds left lifted Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 65-63 come-from-behind victory over UC San Diego Tuesday evening.

The Tritons (6-5, 3-2 CCAA) did get the last opportunity for the win at the buzzer but George Buaku's 3-point attempt from nearly half-court ringed around the rim and out.

It was déjà vu all over again for the senior Nichols as he hit the game-winning basket against Dominican in the home opener last month.

The Toros (6-8, 3-4 CCAA) had trailed by a dozen nearly halfway through the second half only to erase it on a 23-9 run the rest of the way.

Nichols and Mikey Hatfield each had 17 points on the day and Malcolm Johnson had 11 to round out the Toros in double figures. Nichols also came a rebound short from completing a double-double and had dished out four assists.

Although they held the Tritons leading scorer Christian Bayne to four points, Dominguez Hills couldn't stop Christian Oshita, who had a 23-point, 10-rebound night.

CSUDH finished the day shooting 48 percent from the field including seven from beyond the arc. UC San Diego shot 42 percent in field goal range and had eight 3-pointers.

The Toros will celebrate the holidays and hit the road for New Year's Weekend starting with Humboldt State December 29. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
