CARSON – Freshman Deshay Gipson scored 42 points, including making nine 3-point baskets, to break and tie the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball program's single-season record, respectively, in the Toros' 93-77 loss to Cal State San Marcos on a rare Sunday evening at the Torodome.
Gipson, a guard from Palmdale, broke the school's points record that stood for over 17 years when Emanuel Brown scored 37 against Sonoma State. As for the 3-pointers made, he joins former Toro
Ivan Dooley who reached that mark also against the Seawolves two seasons ago.
Jonathan Nichols had a good night on the charity line, making all seven of his free throws. The senior finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
Mikey Hatfield dropped in 11 points and
Malcolm Johnson went to the glass seven times to lead the effort for the Toros.
The Toros (5-8, 2-4 CCAA) had led all throughout the first half, having put a 14-point lead on two different occasions. The Cougars did cut the score to 36-35 at the half.
Both teams had a taken advantage on the free throw line, especially in the second half. The Toros (5-8, 2-4 CCAA) made 19 of their 22 free throws in that period while the Cougars (7-2, 2-1 CCAA) dropped in 18.
While the Cougars had led for a majority of the second half, the Toros kept them under 10 until the 5:21 mark. San Marcos would outscore the Toros 13-7 the rest of the way.
Before celebrating the holidays, the Toros wrap the homestand Tuesday against UC San Diego. Tipoff is at 3:30 p.m.
