CCAA Rivals Meet in Riverside for NCAA Championship First Round

RIVERSIDE - Two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rivals meet when the fifth-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team faces 18th-ranked and fourth-seeded Cal State LA in the NCAA Championship first round on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. The contest will be held in Riverside on the campus of California Baptist. The winner will move on to face the Lancers in the second round on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. It is the fourth meeting this season between the Toros and Golden Eagles.

THE RIVALRY
• The Toros and the Golden Eagles are split in the season series, 1-1-1.
• CSUDH fell to CSULA 4-1 in non-conference action on Sept. 28.
• The Toros were able to avenge that loss two weeks later with a 4-3 home win in conference play.
• The Golden Eagles eliminated CSUDH from the CCAA Tournament 4-3 in PKs. The game was of cially recorded as a 1-1 double overtime draw.

A QUICK LOOK AT THE SEASON
• The Toros took home the CCAA regular season title with a 9-2-1 conference record. It is the second CCAA regular season title for the Toros since 2015 and 10th overall.
• CSUDH has played three ranked opponents, going 2-0-1. The Toros defeated No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 on Sept. 15 to start conference play and No. 25 Cal State LA 3-2 on Oct. 11. CSUDH earned a draw against No. 2 Simon Fraser on Sept. 30.
• The Toros went 3-2-1 in non-conference action. CSUDH defeated Point Loma 1-0 in the season opener, Azusa Pacific 4-3 in overtime and Fresno Pacific 2-0. The Toros fell 4-1 to Cal State LA in a road matchup and had a 0-0 double overtime draw against No. 2 Simon Fraser.
• As the first seed, CSUDH received a first- round bye at the CCAA Tournament. The Toros were eliminated by Cal State LA in penalty kicks, 4-3. The match was officially recorded as a 1-1 draw, but needed a winner to move on to the next round.

CSUDH NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
• The Toros are making their 14th appearance at the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, its second since 2015.
• The Toros are 17-9-3 (.638) in the NCAA postseason, 17-8-3 under 24th-year head coach Joe Flanagan. CSUDH's rst NCAA tournament appearance was in 1982.
• The Toros have won two NCAA national titles (2000, 2008) and ve West Region crowns (2000-01, 2005, 2008, 2009).
• CSUDH's last appearance at the NCAA Championship was in 2015. The Toros defeated No. 10 Fresno Pacific 3-2 in the rst round and got past No. 7 Seattle Pacific in penalty kicks, 3-2. CSUDH was defeated by Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1, in the West Region finals.

ABOUT CAL STATE LA
• The Golden Eagles are ranked 18th in the latest national rankings, seeded fourth in the west and enter the game with a 14-4-3 overall record.
• The Golden Eagles earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championshp by winning the CCAA Tournament. As the fth seed, CSULA got past Chico State, CSUDH and Cal Poly Pomona to win the conference tournament.
• CSULA finished fifth in the CCAA regular season with a 6-4-2 record.
• Julain Zamora leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 11 goals. David Elizaga is CSULA's assist leader with eight. Goalie Steven Barrera has played every minute for the Golden Eagles and sports a 0.83 goals against average with 10 shutouts. Head coach Chris Chamides is in his 15th season at the helm.
