CARSON – Freshman Colten Kresl scored 14 points, Malcolm Johnson grabbed 15 rebounds but the Cal State Dominguez Hills couldn't recover from an early deficit in the 77-57 loss to Cal State East Bay in the California Collegiate Athletic Association season opener Friday.
The Pioneers (1-2, 1-0 CCAA) jumped out to a 14-2 lead and had never trailed at all in the game. They would lead by as many as 19 early in the second half. The Toros (1-3, 0-1 CCAA) did get on an 11-3 run that would cut the deficit down to seven with 9:11 to go.
After an old-fashion 3-point play by Gabriel Hicks had bring the score to 50-43, the Pioneers would score the next 10 points to rebuild a 17-point lead.
Rebounding proved to be one of the biggest difference in the game as the Pioneers beat the Toros on the glass 44-32, including 16 offensive boards.
Druce Asah dropped in 17 points, Juwan Anderson added 16 to lead the Pioneers.
Both teams shot 38 percent from the field and also had seven 3-point field goals each.
The Toros will have to move forward from this defeat as Cal State Monterey Bay visits the Torodome Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Otters are coming off a 95-78 loss to Cal State LA just down the freeway.
