Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Overcomes Slow Start to Tame Broncos

CARSON – Despite a slow start to the game, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team ignited a run that saw them tie Cal Poly Pomona at halftime and take control of the second half to complete a 65-57 come-from-behind victory to open 2017 Thursday night.

The Toros had trailed by as many as 10 halfway through the first half only to erase it by the end of the period.

Vincent Golson highlighted all Toros with a season-high 24 points, with 11 coming from the free throw line. The senior was also five shy from matching his career-high set last year. In addition, he dished out five assists.

The Toros (7-4, 3-2 CCAA) had a cold start in the shooting column. They shot at one point 16 percent from the field before entering intermission at 33 percent. By the end of the night, they finished at 41.5.

Khalil Bedart-Ghani contributed to 10 points and Jonathan Nichols had 12 of the Toros 40 rebounds, marking the second straight contest he has reached that amount.

Riley Schaefer led the effort for the Broncos (3-8, 1-6 CCAA) by dropping a dozen points and gathering seven boards off the bench. Jordan Ogundiran led the Green and Gold with 13 points.

Although CSUDH jumped ahead 7-0 in the first four minutes, CPP took advantage of a 17-0 run to build their largest lead in the game.

A pair of Mikey Hatfield 3-pointers gave the Toros all the confidence they needed to win the game as those baskets sparked a 27-4 run. It was during the momentum that Golson's buzzer beater layup tied the game at 28 apiece.

The Toros ended up finding the buckets in the second half as they went 14-for-29.

Following a rest Friday, CSUDH will welcome Humboldt State to the Torodome Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
