Nichols Sets Career-High in Rebounding; Toros Fall to Pioneers

CARSON – After Cal State East Bay's men's basketball team dominated the first half, Cal State Dominguez Hills made a valiant effort to overcome a 19-point deficit in the second half but came up short in an 80-71 loss to the Pioneers Saturday night.

Although the Toros (9-7, 5-5 CCAA) shot 48.1 percent from the field, free throws seemed to have hurt them as they went 16-for-27 on the line while the Pioneers (12-7, 5-6 CCAA) hit 22 of 26.

Jonathan Nichols grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds coming off the bench. He also had seven points and three assists. Justin Sadler, who was of three Toros to score six points at halftime, came up productive in the second period and had finished the night with 18 points along with six boards.

Dharion Tanner had 14 points, Khalil Bedart-Ghani and Vincent Golson both had 11. Golson's impressive streak of scoring more than 15 points in a game came to an end at 10.

The Pioneers got a big performance from starters Micah Dunhour and Jalen Richard, who combined for 51 points and 15 of 18 free throw attempts.

Richard would hit a 3-point basket at 13:44 to give the Pioneers their largest lead (58-36) in the game. The Toros did bring some momentum back to their side and went on to outscore the Pioneers 19-7. The run would bring the deficit down to 10 with 4:53 left.

CSUEB would benefit the charity stripe the rest of the way by hitting 10-of-12.

The Toros enjoy one more weekend at the Torodome before hitting the road again. Sonoma State will visit Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
