ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Abigail Ponce – Women's Soccer
Women's soccer junior newcomer Abigail Ponce earns the first CSUDH Athlete of the Week award in the 2016-17 school year after scoring two goals in her Toro debut at Hawai`i Pacific Saturday.

Ponce, who came to CSUDH from Butler Junior College, scored the eventual match winner with help from teammate Moa Eriksson in the 27th minute. Moa's twin sister, Ida Eriksson, would contribute to Ponce's second goal in the 72nd minute that put the match out of the Sharks reach.

The Toros opened the first week of the season having shut out BYU-Hawai`i, 2-0, Thursday along with blanking the Sharks, 3-0.

Tati Yandall – Volleyball
Volleyball redshirt freshman Tati Yandall wins the first CSUDH Athlete of the Week award in 2016-17 after being named to Point Loma's Seaside Invitational All-Tournament team last weekend in her collegiate debut.

In four matches played over the weekend, Yandall led the effort for the Toros with a 17.5 attacking percentage. She also led the team with 37 kills and seven service aces. In addition, she reached for 17 digs.

The Toros went 1-3 in the Seaside Invitational, picking up a win over host Sea Lions.

QUICK NOTES

Men's Soccer
Making a Return to Nampa – The Toros are making a trip to the Pacific Northwest for the third time, second to Idaho, in back-to-back seasons. The Toros take on the host Crusaders again but will have a new opponent in the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

The Last Time vs. Northwest Nazarene – CSUDH meets host Northwest Nazarene again after edging the then-No. 13 Crusaders 1-0. Former Toro Mike Dias net the only goal 2:20 into the contest and the defense protected the lead the rest of the way.

A New Opponent – The Toros will be meeting Hawai`i at Hilo for the first time in program history. The Vulcan men's soccer program began 10 years ago but has never faced the Toros.

Women's Soccer
Aloha, Toros – The Toros have been off to a flying start to the season away from the mainland, shutting out the PacWest Conference's BYU-Hawai`i and Hawai`i Pacific last week. CSUDH faces Chaminade Tuesday before returning to California.

Home Opener Coming Up – The Toros will be opening Toro Stadium with Simon Fraser making a tour to Southern California from Vancouver, British Columbia. The Toros will also be honoring veterans who have served the United States' Armed Forces.

A Promising Start – With the wins over BYU-Hawai`i and Hawai`i Pacific to start the season, the Toros are 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season. The Toros have also shutout the first two opponents for the first time since 2010, when they blanked Concordia Irvine and Vanguard.

Volleyball
A Busy Home Opener Coming Up – While the Toros will be opening the Torodome this week, they will be doing so with four opponents as CSUDH will serve as one of the hosts for the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase. Other hosts for the showcase are Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay, UC San Diego and Stanislaus State.

Playing Host – It is the first time since 2009 the Toros have played host to a showcase. In fact, it was the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase. The Toros hosted Seattle Pacific, Western Washington and Alaska Fairbanks.

With four teams joining CSUDH and its fellow CCAA member Humboldt State in the Showcase, the Toros have only seen Montana State Billings from last season. The Toros claimed a 3-1 win in the Route 92 Showdown in Belmont. Rylee Kiger led the effort with 17 kills followed by Morelia Castro with 15. Cathryn Lopez and former Toro Dana Brown each had 16 digs to lead the team in that department.
