Late Turnover Dooms Toros in 77-72 Setback to Cougars

OCEANSIDE -- Down three points with 17 seconds left and possession of the basketball, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros committed their 11th and final turnover of the night, and host Cal State San Marcos capitalized on the other end to hand the Toros a 77-72 defeat on a rare Thursday night CCAA contest.

Senior Ivan Dooley led the Toros with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor as CSUDH dips to 10-13 overall, and 4-11 CCAA with just five games left in the regular season.

Neither team found its stroke in the early going by combining to make just 21 shots in 62 attempts, but Vincent Golson's 10 points staked the Toros to a 29-26 advantage at the half, enjoying as large as an 8-point lead midway through the half.

As cold as both teams were in the first 20 minutes of play, however, both squads warmed up after intermission as they combined for 94 points.  The hot shooting from Golson (4-of-6) and Dooley (7-of-12) led the Toros to making 58.1 percent of their attempts from the floor, but the hosts answered and then some by draining 20-of-28 shots from the floor, good for a 71.4 percent success rate.

The second half was a back-and forth affair as the teams tied five times in the first 10 minutes, until the Toros forged a 51-47 lead on a Golson layup with 10:45 left in the half.

CSUDH pushed its cushion to 60-54 on a Dooley bucket three minutes later, only to have San Marcos answer with five-straight to bring them to a 60-59 game with just under seven minutes remaining.

The teams tied five more times, with the last coming at 71-all on the first of Dooley's two free throws with 1:28 left in the game, before the Toros took their last lead of the game on Dooley's second make.

The Cougars then took the lead for good on their next possession, and made it a 3-point edge after a Toro miss and another converted bucket before CSUDH's final turnover sealed the win for the hosts.

Golson finished with 21 points to round out the two Toros in double figures while Shaquille Hunter paced all Toro rebounders with eight.  CSUSM, however, used a +8 rebounding edge to their advantage, putting home 10 more points in the paint.

CSUDH has over a week off before playing its final home game of the year next Saturday, hosting crosstown rival Cal State LA on February 13 at 7:30 pm in a "Think Pink" contest.  Prior to the contest, the Toros will honor four seniors in Darius Butler, Dooley, Hunter and Brandon Woods in a pregame ceremony.
