2016 Baseball Preview: A Familiar Unfamiliarity

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills interim head coach Tyler Wright may be new to his position as leader of the baseball program in 2016, but he's certainly not unfamiliar with this squad after serving as an assistant coach for the Toros last year under legendary CSUDH skipper George Wing, and helping guide a team that was picked to finish dead last in last year's CCAA preseason coaches poll to within two games of winning the CCAA Tournament, falling to eventual NCAA National Runner-Up in Cal Poly Pomona.

Althought the Toros lost a league-high three players who were drafted in the Major League Baseball amateur draft in two-time All-American slugger Kamran Young (Twins), along with starting pitchers Kevin Brown (Dodgers) and Winston Lavendier (Angels), this year's squad welcomes back two-time All-Region third baseman Brady Conlan and All-CCAA honorable mention selections in flame-thrower TyRay Gatewood and sophomore sensation Brandon Polizzi.

Additionally, 13 newcomers will don the Cardinal and Gold for the first time this year, with nine coming via JC and three by way of Division I schools in junior infielder Parker Hokuf (UNLV), senior catcher Lester Salcedo (North Carolina A&T) and junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Cortez (CSUN).

Despite losing those three players to the MLB draft, CSUDH was shown a modicum more of respect this year after being picked to finish 9th of now 12 league schools with the inclusion of CCAA newcomer Cal State San Marcos, but Wright knows that preseason polls mean nothing, and that it's up to the players who lace it up on a daily basis to determine where the Toros finish, and if they'll see their first NCAA postseason action since 2010 when CSUDH hosted the NCAA West Regional.

Here's coach Wright on this year's team.

CSUDH opens the 2016 season tomorrow afternoon as it hosts San Diego Christian at 2 pm at Toro Field, before concluding the three-game set with a double-header Saturday morning at 11 am.  Tomorrow's honorary first pitch will be the Toros' all-time winningest baseball coach, George Wing.
