2016 Softball Preview: Youth Must Be Served

CARSON -- Coming off a season in which the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team was in the thick of the CCAA tournament race, the 2016 Toros are looking to take that next step and reach the postseason for the first time since the 2013 season when CSUDH hosted the NCAA Super Regional for the second-consecutive year.

To do so, however, head coach Kim Aggabao and her Toros will need nine newcomers to fill the roles of eight seniors who departed last year, and compete in a conference that boasts arguably some of the elite teams in the nation in Sonoma State, Humboldt State and UC San Diego.

Leading the way for those nine, a group that includes seven true freshmen, will be All-CCAA honorable mention selection Madison Murphy, who returns after finishing 4th in doubles and triples, 11th in SLG%, 20th in batting average and hits, 22nd in runs, 23rd in OB% and 25th in home runs in the CCAA.  The Riverside native also led the team in average, hits, doubles, triples and slugging percentage, finishing 2nd in runs and on-base percentage, 4th in RBI and 5th in home runs.

The circle also gets a boost from welcoming back its starting duo of senior Jamie Duran and sophomore Alyssa Valinches, who combined for 22 of the team's 23 wins while tossing 310 of 345 total innings of work.

The Toros open the 2016 season at the Desert Stinger Tournament, hosted by Montana State Billings and taking place in Las Vegas.  CSUDH opens its homestand against Aggabao's alma mater in UC San Diego, with the first of two double-headers taking place on Friday, February 19, at Toro Diamond, with first pitch of game one set for a 12 noon start.
