Toros Give CCAA Champs a Scare Before Chico State Survives, 64-57

CHICO -- Playing for pride after being eliminated last weekend, and heading into Chico State with the Wildcats needing just one win to clinch at least a share of the California Collegiate Athletic Association crown, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team gave CSUC all it handle before bowing out in a 64-57 decision after the Toros held a one-point lead at the half.

Darius Butler led the charge for the Cardinal and Gold with a game-high 17 points as the Toros dip to 10-17 overall and 4-15 in the CCAA.

Butler, Vincent Golson and Brandon Woods kept the Toros competitive in the first half by scoring 25 of the team's 32 points, reversing CSUDH's 6-point deficit by outscoring the Wildcats 13-6 over the final five and a half minutes of the period.

A pair of baskets by Justin Sadler to start the second half followed by a Golson three-pointer gave the Toros a 3-point lead, with five-straight points by Butler pushing the lead to 44-36 with 14:20 left.

The Wildcats, however, used a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to retake control, with the last of two Nate Ambrosini free throws giving the hosts a 48-44 lead.

An old-fashioned Butler 3-point play brought the Toros to within one, but Ambrosini hit another free throw and a triple to give Chico State breathing room as the Wildcats kept CSUDH at arm's length the rest of the half in the 7-point win.

CSUDH was out-rebounded by 13 in the loss, with Golson adding 15 in the penultimate game of the year for the Toros.
