Stanislaus State Completes Miracle Comeback as Toros Fall in Season Finale

TURLOCK -- Seemingly in control of the final game of the 2015-16 season at Stanislaus State after leading 75-63 at the 6:20 mark, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team went scoreless while the Warriors finished the game on a 17-0 run, completing a miraculous comeback in an 80-75 win over the Toros on Senior Night.

Ivan Dooley's 17 points led five Toros who scored in double figures, but Kyle Gouveia led all scorers with 25 points in the 5-point win, the fifth time the Toros have fallen by five or less points.  CSUDH finishes the campaign at 10-18 overall and 4-16 in the CCAA, earning three more overall and one more league win in the process while in contention for a berth in the CCAA Tournament until the penultimate weekend of league play.

"This season definitely had its highs and lows, and I wouldn't have changed it for anything," begins CSUDH men's basketball interim head coach Steve Becker.

"We were able to set a few school records this year, beat the #5 ranked team in the country in league play, and our seniors are graduating," he continues.  "We are still building our culture and are making strides as a program, and while still having much to accomplish. I am extremely grateful to our four seniors in Darius Butler, Brandon Woods, Shaquille Hunter, and Ivan Dooley for all of their hard work and dedication to our program and, most importantly, for laying the foundation on which to build."

The Toros got off to a quick start behind Dooley's 13 first half points, taking a 42-37 lead at the half while shooting 50 percent from the field and making eight 3-pointers.

Darius Butler gave the visitors their largest lead twice, at 11 points on a layup with 4:25 left in the half and at 13 one possession and 81 seconds later.

The second half looked like a carbon copy of the first as CSUDH again pushed its lead to double figures at 53-43 on a Butler triple at 15:26, and again at 60-50 on a Justin Sadler bucket four minutes later.

The lead reached 13 at 72-60 after Dooley sank a pair of free throws, with just 7:10 left in regulation.  And after Stanislaus drained a triple, Sadler answered right back with a deuce to give CSUDH a commanding 75-63 lead with 6:20 remaining.

That's when the Toros started missing and the Warriors starting hitting, connecting for 10 straight points to bring the hosts to 75-73 at the 1:26 mark.  After a Toro miss, Christian Bayne was fouled attempting a 3-pointer, and drained all three attempts to give Stanislaus its first lead of the second half.

The Toros had a chance to tie the game after a Warrior foul with 16 seconds left, but the front end of a 1 and 1 attempt was missed, and Stanislaus was perfect over their final free throw attempts in the last 13 seconds, sealing the 80-75 decision.

Butler finished with 16 in his final game as a Toro, with Golson adding 14, Sadler 12 and Shaquille Hunter 10 in the loss.

CSUDH shot nearly 50% from the floor for the game, but was outrebounded by a wide 41-29 margin.

The Toros bade farewell to four seniors, but will welcome back point guard Golson, forward Sadler and swingman Jonathan Nichols to next year's squad, as well as a bevy of new talent led by Roderick Williams, who redshirted this year, and Raefel Agee, currently a senior at Silverado HS.

"The future is bright for the Toros, as we feel the underclassmen who return next season, who have now been through the rigors of the CCAA for at least two years, as well as some of our early signees/commits, will allow us to compete at an elite level in the CCAA."
