Conlan Put on Spotlight for Philippines at World Baseball Classic Qualifier

SYDNEY, Australia -- Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Brady Conlan had three hits, including a homer and three RBI, alumni left-hander Devon Ramirez threw two innings, but the two Toros and Team Philippines were eliminated by host Australia and New Zealand in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers Thursday and Friday.
 
Australia dominated the Philippines, 11-1, in game one Thursday night, and then earlier today, a late-inning surge gave New Zealand a 17-7 win to eliminate the Blue, Red and Yellow.
 
Despite the two defeats, the two Toros caught the eyes of MLB Advanced Media on how Conlan landed a spot on Team Philippines.
 
Conlan, hitting in the fifth spot against Team Australia, got the Philippines on the board in the first inning with an RBI single to center. Australia answered back in its half of the first and took the lead in the second inning.
 
Less than 24 hours later against New Zealand, Conlan broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning with an inning-opening homer to left field.
 
Ramirez got the starting nod against New Zealand. He allowed two runs in the first, one in the second, on four hits, two walks and a passed ball.
 
Conlan took part of the Philippines regaining the lead in the sixth. He opened the inning with a single to left, advanced to second on a deep fly out and scored on back-to-back singles to break the 4-4 tie.
 
Although it added two more runs that inning to build a 7-4 lead, New Zealand answered back again that proved to be the difference in the game, scoring six runs in that inning.
 
Conlan is expected to rejoin the Toros hopefully by Feb. 16, when they host CCAA and crosstown rival Cal Poly Pomona in a non-conference game. In the meantime, CSUDH plays game two of a three-game series against Cal Baptist tonight at 6 p.m.
